Dear Mr. Khoo,

In a relationship be it between husband and wife, parents and children, employer and subordinates, government and citizens, there must be a sense of security and trust - A feeling that you can truly be yourself as we strive for maturity and individuality.
You achieve this by first listening and finding our what is in their heart and mind.

Unfortunately, during the years of nation building, Singaporeans were not given the opportunity to be ourselves and be respected for what we stand for. We, as Singaporeans, became unhappy and frustrated although we lived a secure and comfortable life because the Government either had little time for the people or they were insensitive to our needs.

Worse, the ordinary Singaporeans became convinced that the progress of the nation only benefited the rich and elite of society. They believed their continuing struggle in life was leading them nowhere, except to satisfy their basic need for food and shelter.

This has resulted in the PAP losing support from Singaporeans. I often wonder why such an educated society is given such little recognition and respect for our contribution? Because we are not valued as honest and genuine contributors, many of us have migrated. I ache and feel anguish when I observe the rift between our Government and people!

As an ordinary individual, I don’t think I could contribute much to bridge this gap of misunderstanding that PAP is for the upper class. All I could do is to write to you to share with you all my worries, concerns and frustrations and hope you could do something for the ordinary people.

I believe that you are in the position to build an even better rapport between the Government and the people. In the Marina South Downtown (MSD) development the land cost will be extremely high so it is impossible to build public housing. Nevertheless, we should try to convince and propose to the Government to build the National Library at MSD.

By doing so, you are bridging the gap between the Government and people, sending a message to the people that the Government cares and has their well being and happiness in mind. This will indirectly draw the people closer to the Government, and help make the ordinary people appreciate them. At the same time, you are creating a balanced society.

Do bear this in mind; the feeling of care, fairness and equality are torches of hope for the ordinary people.

As I see it, this project is not a total lost of Government spending. If we look at the brighter side, it is a long-term investment. Let us make the National Library a unique landmark for education, where both Singaporeans and people from around the region can gather to develop new levels of learning.
It will make Singapore prestigious and lend itself a sense of pride as well as help us to reach our goal of excellence and be the leader intellectually around the region

Your’s sincerely,
Sunflower Chong
